Ocido, Garong rule NCFP/Scoop tourney

MICHAEL Ocido of West Negros University and Steven Garong of Maranatha Christian College got slim advantage in the tie-break but it did not matter as both earned the Non-Masters and 18-U Juniors title, respectively, over the weekend at the Activity Center of Gaisano Grand Bacolod mall.

The WNU champion collected 5.0 points (21.0 BH) to escape close rival Police Officer 2 Ernie Abanco, who finished with 5.0 points (17.0 BH) in the 2nd National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) tournament organized by Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (Scoop)-Bacolod.

Ocido, an assistant coach of Christian Academy of Bacolod, went home with P3,000 cash while Montoyo received P1,500. Both winners brought home NCFP-SCOOP-Bacolod glass trophies.

Jethro Jemenez took the third place with 4.5 points (20.0 BH), likewise escaping a slim tie-break against fourth placer Raymund dela Peña also with 4.5 points (19.5 BH). Jemenez earned P1,000 and a glass trophy.

Completing the Top 10 in the non-Masters are (No.5) Ted Ian Montoyo, 4.0 (No.6); Eric Abanco, 4.0 (No.7); Anthony Paran, 4.0 (No.8); Marvin Ting, 3.5 (No.9); Eden Agape Tumbos, 3.5 (No. 9); and Lincoln Miraflor, 3.0 (No. 10).

Garong gathered 5.0 points (22.0 BH) and the top prize of P1,500 with a glass trophy while Alson Vincent Lim settledt for first runner-up with 5.0 points (21.5 BH) for P1,000 and a glass trophy.

Kenan John Anoran bagged the third place with 4.0 points for P800 plus a glass trophy.

Finishing in the 18-U Top 10 are (No. 4) Valerio Mangubat, 4.0; (No.5) Gerard Gelera, 4.0; (No.6) Danielle Magallona, 4.0; (No.7) Reu-Bethel Lucenara, 3.5;(No.8) John Vincent Murabe, 3.5; (No.9) Kristel Shayne Herrera, 3.5; and (No.10) Edwin Perez Jr., 3.5.

With private entities committing to support the tournament, more competitions are expected by the organizers next year.

The NCFP-sanctioned tournament was also supported by Federation chairman Prospero Pichay, executive director Grand Master Jayson Gonzales, vice president for the Visayas Rep. Neri Colmenares of Bayan Muna Partylist, Negros Occidental coordinator Edwin Llamo, and the City Government of Bacolod headed by Mayor Monico Puentevella.
