THE Negros Occidental Private Sports, Cultural and Educational Association (Nopsscea) is ready for the Regional Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) Meet in Antique on January 8 to 12, with lots of expectation from Negrenses.
Set to leave Bacolod today, the contingent will try to lift the pride of Negrenses as the delegation compete against the best athletes in the region.
The Freddie “Nene” Lazarito-mentored Ceres-La Salle Football Team and Jay Biñas’ badminton squad, which both topped the 18th University Games last year in Bacolod, are among the teams Negros hopes to fare well.
Lazarito’s wards are also the defending Prisaa regional and national champion hence, pressure is quite tough on the veteran tactician.
He stressed that after the October victory, he immediately gathered his players to prepare and defend their title in the Regional Prisaa and eventually in the national.
“Our preparation is still the same as in the UniGames and given that Iloilo can select good players, we will have a hard time beating them,” Lazarito said.
Like the Ceres-La Salle squad, the Nopsscea badminton champion is also feeling the pressure as the women’s team is the defending regional champion and second runner-up in last year’s national finals.
The teams have been preparing for months now in quest to defend the WV Prisaa women’s division titles as well as recapturing supremacy in the men’s division. The most challenging thing, however, is for the bunch to maintain the achievement they earned last year when they bagged the UniGames titles in both divisions.
The University of St. La Salle shuttlers are now stronger with the inclusion of international players Aprille Diane Bibiano and Dhessa Mae Arino, and Palarong Pambansa player Aizyl Joy Anuales in the distaff side. Dawn Christian Cuyno and Alem Palmares are a boost for the men’s team.
“The addition of Bibiano and Arino, another freshmen, and Anuales will further strengthen our campaign in defending the WV Prisaa title,” Biñas said.
USLS women’s shuttlers are made complete with Ballenas siblings Precious Mae and Precious Minie, and Izaa Temporosa.
Completing the USLS men’s team are Clarence Valencia, Christian Sison, Christian Pavia, Charlton Duron and Keanu Glenn Taclas.
Fifteen sporting events will be contested in a week with eight set to start on January 9.
