7:30 p.m. – Team A vs Team E
TEAM D upset Team B, 77-68, in the knockout round of the ongoing Ayala Basketball Club 3rd Conference Tournament to barge into the semis and the right to face top seed Team C tonight.
Both squads started strong in the first quarter as Raylund Trespicio found his old shooting touch pumping in 11 points as Team D led the first quarter, 18-15. Team B’s Willie Dasal scored eight points to keep the game close.
Leon Bautista spearheaded the next onslaught for Team D, hitting 10 of his team’s 25 second quarter points while clamping down on defense for a 43-26 halftime lead.
Team B came to life in the third canto behind Tommy Andren and Bong Quinon as they combined to cut the deficit to eight points going into the final quarter.
Dasal and Andren then made one final push in the last quarter by putting their team in striking distance cutting the lead to only three and taking the momentum on their side with five minutes left.
Team D had other plans and dominated the shaded lane as Popoy Jamero and Chac Mirano made timely baskets to spoil Team B’s comeback bid.
Mirano led his team with 17 points, Trespicio and Bautista sank 14 points each while Jamero added 12.
Dasal and Andren had 14 and 12 points, respectively, in a losing effort.
Against Team C tonight, sweet shooting Marvin Tan is expected to boost Team D’s offense while speedy Brod Hojilla anchors Team A against Team E’s Sibug brothers.
Team C and Team A enjoy a twice-to-beat advantage after finishing No.1 and No. 2 at the end of the first round. (HGD)
