“CHESS is not all about winning; sometimes it’s all about learning.”
This is how Negros Integrated Chess Association Inc. (Nica) president Tibor Espinosa sees the game as they launch the 1st Petron Negros Kiddies Rapid Chess Championship 2014 on January 25 at Nena's Rose Chicken-Lacson, Bacolod City.
Espinosa said the event is part of Nica’s chess development program this year.
The rapid chess event aims to test the analytical skills of the young Negrense woodpushers in actual play and teach them how to improve their moves on the mat.
There will also be lectures on how to handle opening, middle, and end games.
Organizers said they will also explain to participants how chess can help in achieving their ambitions as well as its application in real life.
Prizes at stake are as follows: champion, P3,000 with prestige glass trophy; second place , P2,000; third place, P 1,500; fourth place, P1,200; fifth place, P1,000; and sixth to 10th, P300. Each of the winners will also receive a gold medal.
Special awardees will also receive P300 plus a medal that include Top Female and Youngest Player.
The tournament is open to all chess players 13 years old and under – regardless of nationality.
A player is given 25 minutes of rapid play to finish the game.
Participants are, likewise, advised to bring their own chess sets and clocks.
Submit entry form at the Secretariat located at the Nica Chess Gallery-Centroplex Mall and WNU Sports Office.
Registration fee is P200, inclusive of lunch.
