A TOTAL of 1,594 medals are at stake in the ongoing Batang Pinoy National Finals in Bacolod City to be contested mostly by school-based athletes from various local government units in the country.
The sporting spectacle consisting of 21 events is also designed to boost the potentials of the out-of-school youth.
The Philippine Sports Commission said the competition is mostly focused on athletes aged 15 years old and below, the winners of which will have the opportunity to take part in a national development program.
The governing body, which bankrolled these hostilities, stressed that it will be the national sports associations that will identify potential athletes who will undergo rigid training and skills development. The chosen ones will have a chance to be part of the national team.
Around 2,500 delegates will see action for top honors with 824 coming from Luzon, 647 from the Visayas, 569 from Mindanao, and 500 from hosts Bacolod and Negros Occidental.
Arnis and athletics will be played at Panaad Park and Sports Stadium oval; badminton, Pohang Badminton Court; basketball 3-on-3, Bacolod Tay Tung High School; boxing, Bacolod Arts, Youth and Sports Center; chess, Bacolod Government Center Masskara Hall; futsal, Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center; gymnastics (cheerdance), University of St. La Salle (USLS); karatedo, Robinsons Place Bacolod; lawn tennis, Montevista Tennis Association courts; sepak takraw, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos; swimming, Panaad Park swimming pool; table tennis, Lopue’s San Sebastian courts; taekwondo, Bacolod City National High School; volleyball, USLS College covered court; and weightlifting, SM Transport Hub.
