WNU woodpushers shine in Bago tourney

WEST Negros University's Kenan John Anoran scored 5.5 points to capture the crown in the 3rd National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP)-Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (Scoop)-Bacolod Inc. U14 Kiddies Chess Tournament held February 15 and 16 at the ABAP gym in Bago City.

Anoran took home P 1,500 cash, a trophy and a certificate while teammate Valerio Mangubat finished second with 4.5 points (24.0 BH) good for P1,000 cash prize, a trophy and a certificate.

Pontevedra's bet Joshua Panes scored 4.5 points (21.0 BH) for third place. He won a cash incentive of P800, a trophy and a certificate.

Others in the Top 10 are Jorad Ramirez (4.0 pts., 23.0 BH) - Notre Dame, Bago City; Kian Shane Anoran (4.0 pts., 19.0 BH) - Apolinario Mabini Elementary School, Bacolod City; Jrich Go (4.0 pts., 18.5 BH) - University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos; Julius Ceasar Capistrano (3.5 pts., 21.0 BH) - Pontevedra; Junnel Almajo (3.5 pts., 18.5 BH) - Ramon Torres Ma-ao National High School, Bago City; Paulino Manao (3.5 pts., 18.0 BH) - Maranatha Christian College, Bacolod; and Seer Romeo Sison (3.5 pts., 15.0 BH) - WNU.

Each received a consolation prize of P150, a medal and a certificate.

Top Female awardee was Jean Rose Sangco of RTMNHS-Bago City with 3.0 points (23 BH). She received a P250 cash prize, a medal and a certificate.

Adam Noah Belano (2.0 pts., 18.0 BH) of Estefania Elementary School in Bacolod City was chosen Youngest Participant and received a P150 cash incentive, a medal and a certificate.

The two-day tournament, held in line with Bago City’s 48th Charter Anniversary and Babaylan Festival, is part of NCFP and Scoop-Bacolod Inc.’s joint venture in providing an avenue for a highly competitive chess tournament in the province of Negros Occidental.

The tournament is supported by chairman Prospero Pichay, executive director Grand Master Jayson Gonzales, vice president for the Visayas Neri Colmenares of Bayan Muna partylist, Negros Occidental coordinator Edwin Llamo, and Bago City Government headed by Mayor Ramon Torres.

Major sponsors are Merci Pasalubong, Central Negros Electric Cooperative, 2Go Travel and Leo Vision, while media partners include Watchmen Daily Journal, Negros Daily Bulletin, Sun.Star Bacolod, dyEZ Aksyon Radyo Bacolod, Magic 106.3, Sports Manila.Net, Scoop-Manila, and Scoop-Davao. (HGD)
