Wednesday, March 5, 2014
MURCIA'S pride and two-division world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes (32-1-1, 18 KOs) will defend his WBO light flyweight title against Mexican Moises Fuentes (19-1-1, 10 KOs) on May 10 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The 31-year-old "Ahas," along with WBO minimumweight champion Merlito Sabillo, is currently in the United States for a training camp in preparation for his return bout against Fuentes.
Both fighters first fought in an epic 12-round slugfest that resulted in a majority draw in March of last year at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
Nietes, who hasn’t lost since 2004, will surpass the record of Filipino boxing legend Gabriel “Flash” Elorde as the longest reigning world champion in Philippine history.
Nietes won a huge third round knockout over former Mexican world champion Sammy Gutierrez at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum last November.
Fuentes is on a three-fight winning streak including a seventh round stoppage against Omar Salado in Mexico City.
The Nietes-Fuentes 2 is presented by the ALA Promotions, Asia’s top boxing promotion outfit, and Fuentes’ handler Zanfer Promotions. (HGD)
