WORLD Boxing Organization minimumweight champion Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo of Toboso, Negros Occidental will put his title at stake against young Mexican challenger Francisco “Chihuas” Rodriguez Jr. on March 22 in Monterrey, Mexico.

Dennis Cañete, ALA Promotions’ vice president and general manager, confirmed this development.

The 29-year-old Sabillo has an unblemished record of 23 wins and a draw with 12 victories via knockouts. “Tiger” is in tough preparation in San Diego, California for his first fight this year and will be favorite to win.

Sabillo has been very successful as a pro which included a colorful year-ender victory via split decision over Carlos Buitrago of Nicaragua in his November 9 title defense held at the Araneta Coliseum.

Merlito said he hopes and pray that he will be blessed again with another win.

“I pray that I win this fight,” the champion said.

This marks Sabillo’s second international stint following his March 9, 2013 fight in Coliseo Mario de Leon in Cerete, Colombia where he beat hometown hero Luis dela Rosa in the eighth round of the scheduled 12-round.

Validating Sabillo’s successful career, the Toboso-hailed champion is set to receive the highest honor for professional boxers in the Elorde Memorial Awards set March 25 at the Sofitel Hotel Tent City.

His challenger 20-year-old Rodriquez (13-2 win-loss car with 9KOs) is coming off a technical draw against fellow Mexican Ernesto Guerrero last January 18 in Sonora, Mexico and a unanimous decision over another Mexican Moises Calleros.
