FANS were treated to two exciting games during the opening day of the 2014 Ayala Basketball Club’s 1st Conference played at the Ayala Northpoint hardcourt.
In the first game, MKK topped Toby’s in overtime behind Tommy Andren’s 33 points.
Toby’s started out hot in the first half as Marvin Tan led all scorers with 12 points, all in the opening quarter, as his team’s raced to 46-39 advantage at halftime.
MKK suddenly sprung back to life outscoring Tobys, 21-13 as Andren scored eight points while Joey Jesena canned two triples to put MKK up by a point at the end of the third canto.
Toby’s started the fourth quarter with a huge game with Tan and Paulo Avecilla delivering the needed points to give their team a six-point lead with less than a minute remaining.
MKK then turned to their three-point shooting in a desperate move to keep the game close.
The effort paid off as Francis Andren hit one in the corner to cut the lead to three points as another one followed as Elmer Dado hit the game-tying triple with three seconds remaining sending the game into overtime.
MKK then controlled the tempo in the extra period, going down low to George Zuniga as he took advantage of his height scoring on crucial free throws to seal the win for his team.
Andren was supported by his younger brother Francis with 11 points and Zuniga with 10.
Tan led his team with 27 points while Avecilla added 14 for the losing cause.
The second game was just as exciting as it witnessed Bambam Oquindo’s immense skill of Kaya Ta-Oi as he led his team with 44 big points, but fell short to a much bigger and determined DRJ Wellness team, 98-97 also in overtime.
After leading 39-30 at halftime, DRJ was shocked as Kaya Ta-Oi delivered a 10-0 run in just two minutes of play, giving them the first lead of the game.
Oquindo scored 17 points in the third quarter alone outscoring the whole DRJ team as it only managed 12 points against Kaya’s 28 points.
Refusing to lose, DRJ slowly creeped back into the game led by Renren Lacson’s penetrating game while big men Chac Mirano and Popoy Jamero took turns in pounding the shaded lane giving DRJ the lead.
With 17 seconds left, Christer Isulat took an inbound pass from Oquindo in the corner hitting a triple, knotting the score 82-all at the end of regulation.
Oquindo then continued with his offensive brilliance scoring both inside and the outside in overtime while Lacson of DRJ was just as effective penetrating the lane.
Lacson sealed the game with a free throw giving his team a four-point lead with 10 seconds remaining.
Isulat made a desperation three-pointer but it wasn’t enough as DRJ dribbled its way to a one-point win as time expired.
Lacson led DRJ Wellness with 30 points as Mirano added 20, Jamero 15, and JG Villeran 10 points.
Isulat had 15 while Paulo Tibajia and Jake Dequilla had 10 points each for Kaya. (HGD)
