THIRTY-TWO teams from Bacolod City and Negros Occidental are expected to take the hard and mahogany courts of West Negros University when the Talk ‘N Text-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Under 18 “Tatluhan” National Championship takes off next month.
Anthony Carlo Agustin, SBP-Negros Occidental chairman, said over Aksyon Isports of dyEZ Aksyon Radyo-Bacolod yesterday the date is yet to be finalized for the tournament open to teams in the province.
"The staging of this undertaking is part of SBP’s thrust to provide a highly-competitive tournament in the grassroots. It will allow aspiring basketball players to display their skills and be noticed by scouts from various schools and commercial teams,” he added.
The Fiba-endorsed tournament will have 20 legs nationwide open to any team of three players plus an alternate aged under 18, Agustin said.
"The winners in this regional qualifier will receive P10,000, trophies, and medals. Aside from these prizes, the top teams will get a chance to represent the country to the Fiba 3-on-3 Asia Pacific which the Philippines hosts on July 19 to 20,” he said.
The 3-on-3 basketball is also SBP’s centerpiece grassroots development with the national finals to be held in Manila and later in other key cities in the Philippines.
Agustin noted that SBP executive director Renauld “Sonny” Barrios said the Fiba World is pushing hard the 3-on-3 event, and Fiba-Asia wants the Philippines to be in the forefront of the event.
“They find it a big goal to popularize basketball globally like soccer (football) which is the No. 1 team sports in the world,” Barrios said. (HGD)
