BACOLOD Tay Tung High School finally put one over long-time rival St. John's Institute, 74-50 on Friday to take solo leadership in Bracket B of the Coca- Cola PBA Youngstars Bacolod leg eliminations at West Negros University gym.

Jesmar Pedrosa topscored for the Thunderbolts with 20 points, center Miguel Corteza added 19, Errol Pastor scattered 18 and Fritz Tagamolila put in eight markers for the rare win.

The quartet of Japson, Montinola, Magay and Puentevella finished with a combined 39 points which is below par of their ability, giving the Libertad-based squad a much-needed boost.

Coach Mark Belangel's boys jumped to 25-16 in the first quarter and followed up with a 17-8 clamping in the second for a 42-24 lead at half.

A 19-9 surge in the third farther advanced BTTHS' advantage as SJI coach Richi Militante could not find the right combination to stop the onslaught.

From a 33-61 disadvantage, Hua Ming tried to claw back but the most it could counter is a 17-all standoff in the final quarter.

The victory put the Thunderbolts atop its group and directly in the path of either University of Negros Occidental Recoletos or West Negros University in the crossover semifinal. (HGD)
