IT IS North versus South. West Negros University against Bacolod Tay Tung High School at 9 a.m. today for the Bacolod Leg final game of the 2014 Coca Cola PBA Youngstars at WNU gym.
WNU muzzled and held St. John's Institute scoreless in the last two minutes for a 79-73 victory while Tay Tung scrambled to a 95-92 scary win over University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in the crossover semifinals yesterday.
The Thunderbolts, mentored by Mark Belangel were leading 86-74 with 5:35 left when Gadoy Guevarra sparked a 10-0 run with a triple and four free throws to give new life to Coach Gerom Aledron's underdog squad.
Center Miguel Corteza's follow-up, JM Pedrosa's drive, Fritz Tagamolila's open jumper and Corteza's final incursion ended the Baby Rams' short-lived uprising as their desperate heaves from the arc never found their marks.
Hua Ming found an unlikely hero in Christopher Suarez who hit from the triple area, scored on running shots and jumpers to compliment Rafa Puentevella and Tim Montinola's all around game to take the lead at 71-70 with 3:30 remaining.
Two three-pointers in succession left unattended shoved the Junior Mustangs at 76-71 and the Blue Falcons could only score its final two as Ian Japzon was short from the three-point area.
Passing errors and fumbles brought Coach Richi Militante's Falcons falling down while Dennis Tumayan survived another close contest and a chance to repeat as the tournament's champion.
The semifinals were a battle between the best schools located south of Bacolod (UNO-R and Tay Tung) and the other two in the North (SJI and WNU). (HGD)
