Best thing

THE best things in life are free.

One of them is a free kick which the Palestinians took to win the AFC Challenge Cup in Maldives spoiling in the process Azkals' date with history.

We cannot fault Jason de Jong for fouling Ashraf Nu'man but if he didn't there was no way for keeper Rolan Muller to miss that precise hit under the bar over the wall and into the net.

That lone goal remained until the end which ironically ended a superb performance from a Philippine Team which saw much promise and improvement under Coach Thomas Dooley.

For Palestine, a country split in half by the Gaza Strip and the West Bank separated by Israel, its suffering is temporarily eased by their first ever-international football trophy.

It is the best thing that happened to a country torn between the Hamas and Fatah political factions who want to take control over a state under Israeli restrictions.

For now the Palestinians can savor their victory with Nu'man hugging his Golden Boot and defender Murad Ismail Said keeping a watchful eye on his Most Valuable Player award.

The Azkals have been great in the Challenge Cup and was just a win short of going to Australia. Under Dooley, new faces, stronger and younger, will most likely stir more passion and inspiration for the new generation of Filipino footballers.

In our end, Ceres-La Salle FC and the Yanson Brothers’ age-group competitions are silently getting new looks and more are coming to join this development program where others failed or have never have done anything at all.

It is still the best thing happening here.
