THE country's Under 14 girls football team surprised even themselves with an impressive six-nil win over Singapore in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Regional Championships at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam.
The opening victory on Tuesday saw Davao City's Joyce Omboy Semacio scoring in the 10th minute and Cebu's Itsuko Maree Bacatan hitting one in the 23rd minute to give the Philippines a 2-0 lead at half.
Not to be outdone and making sure she can contribute, Arantxa Mari Alvez Trebol of Mandaue City added another goal in the 46th minute. Compounding the Singaporean woes, Sharifah Khaliesah erred and sent home an own goal in the 60th minute.
Taking advantage of the miscue, lucky Francesca Suerte, an Ilongga, rolled in the young Filipinas' fifth goal in the 68th minute and Bacatan sealed the win in 70 (+2) minute.
