SAN Carlos City is fast becoming Negros Occidental’s football capital following the growing number of footballers it has contributed to the national teams as well as to different universities and clubs in Bacolod and Metro Manila.

This was declared by City Assistant Sports Officer John Carmona yesterday during an interview over Aksyon Isports of dyEZ Aksyon Radyo-Bacolod.

Carmona, also the regional technical director of Philippine Football Federation, said the support given by the city government under Mayor Gerardo Valmayor Jr., who is likewise the San Carlos FC president, is a huge boost in the development of the sports in San Carlos.

“The LGU has played a vital role in the development of various sports disciplines in the city, not only football. Aside from Mayor Valmayor, First District Rep. Jules Ledesma has also been very supportive in our endeavor,” Carmona added.

Three San Carlos City-based players were part of the Under 14 Philippine Team, the runner-up in the recently-concluded AFC U14 Regional Championship in Vietnam.

National skipper Tenelyn Espana Otom, Tejanee Isulat and Princess Beth Caparida were part of the PHL XI which bowed to the Thais, 1-2 early this month.

The Philippines also received the “Fair Play” award and Joyce Semacio of Davao was also named the tournament’s “Most Valuable Player.”

On June 28 and 29, San Carlos City in partnership with the San Carlos City FC will stage a two-day City Charter Day Football Festival.

About a hundred teams from across the Visayas region are expected to converge in San Carlos City fields for the football festival.

Participants will be competing in various age categories like ages 3, 4 and 5, 6-8 years old, 9-10 years-old, 11-12 years-old, U14, U16 (boys and girls), Women’s Open, Men’s Open, and the 38-Up.
