Wednesday, June 25, 2014
NOW there are only 12 left out of the 37 teams that joined the 8th Monico Cup 21 Under basketball tournament at Bays Center in Bacolod City.
By weekend, it will be trimmed further to only six squads after its knockout games depending on Commissioner Jack Marañon's schedule. Only the top two teams from Bracket A to F advance after each single round elimination.
Game 1 will pit Barangay 18 against Barangay 16 while Handumanan will challenge Barangay 24 in Game 2. Maui Huelar's Barangay 35 will take the cemented floor in Game 3 against the winner between Tangub and Mansilingan being played at press time.
Singcang and Barangay 22 will try to survive in Game 4 while Barangay 10 has to contend with the talent of Banago coached by veteran William Descutido in Game 5.
Game 6 will feature darkhorse Cabug and last Monico Cup runner-up Barangay 19 who were more determined to survive the elimination round. Defending champion Barangay 9 failed to advance to the knockout phase.
Winner in Game 1 (Barangay 18 or Barangay 16) will square off with Game 6 winner (Cabug or Barangay 19) for the quarterfinal round. Game 2 survivor (Handumanan or Barangay 24) will face Game 5 victor (Barangay 10 or Banago) in another QF match.
Barangay 35 or Tangub/Mansilingan is set to encounter Singcang or Barangay 22 in the third QF sked (Winner G3 vs WG4) and all the winners will qualify for the semifinal round.
The three QF losers will play a single round robin series and the team with the most number of wins or highest quotient (if tied) will take the number four spot in the SF series.
