NOW there are only six teams left in the 8th Monico Cup 21 Under basketball tournament at Bays Center in Bacolod City.
Of the weekend winners, five of the Magic 12 triumphed by big margins except one which came from behind in the last four seconds.
A total of 41-point difference was registered by three teams on Saturday as Barangay 19 stunned Villamonte, 71-60 and Barangay 10 stopped Banago, 78-68. Barangay 35 trampled on Tangub, 96-76 for the night's highest advantage highlighting the tripleheader.
Barangay 10 (Mambuloc) relied on the shooting and quarterbacking talent of the Doromal- de Real- dela Gente trio. The taller Banago cagers failed to use its height and played poor defense coupled by individual offense.
On Sunday, an accumulated 40-point difference marked the knock out phase as Singcang torched Barangay 22, 79-60 and Barangay 18 did not allow Barangay 16 to recover with an 89-70 domination.
Sandwiched between the two no-contest games was the only close match as Handumanan trailed all the way and scored its only lead in the last four seconds. The clutch hit was enough to send Barangay 24 packing and miss the quarterfinal as Handumanan advanced with an 87-85 squeaker.
Quarterfinal matches on Sunday, July 6, pit Game 1 winner Barangay 18 against Game 6 qualifier Barangay 19, runner-up in the last Monico Cup. Game 2 survivor Handumanan will try to eliminate Game 5 best team Barangay 10.
Game 3 champs Barangay 35, composed of UNO-Rians and mentored by village chief Maui Huelar, will meet in the main game against Game 4 top squad Singcang.
The winners will advance to the semifinals while the three losers will play a single round to determine which team will represent the fourth team in the SF crossover.
A meeting of all quarterfinalists is set on July 3, tourmament manager Jack Marañon said.
