STARRING in the United Football League 2nd Tier, the Bacolod-based Ceres- La Salle FC not only advanced to Division 1 but also showcased some of the country’s best talents.
San Carlos City's Jayson Panhay was named Division 2 Most Valuable Player after leading his team to 18 wins, three draws and a defeat in 22 outings. Keeper Louie Michael Casas bagged the Golden Gloves award while Korean reinforcement Jinho Kim was awarded Best Striker.
With Ceres' achievement in the current UFL season, top officials from the province of Negros Occidental and Bacolod City lauded the team’s impressive performance.
Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. congratulated Ceres-La Salle FC for putting the province again in the sporting limelight.
“I encourage Negrenses, including those in Metro Manila, to continue cheering and supporting the team in the second round,” Marañon said.
“Your performance is a testimonial to sports excellence in our Negros First Sports program – much more so that they are the only provincial team in the 12-team national tournament,” added Marañon.
Vice Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said the achievement of Ceres is a continuing manifestation of the province’s claim for football supremacy in this sporting discipline.
“It’s with pride and honor that I join the people of Negros Occidental in congratulating the Ceres-La Salle FC as they topped UFL’s Division 2. This is again giving our province the chance to be known in the national stage, especially in this field of sports. I enjoin every Negrense to continue supporting our home team,” Lacson added.
Mayor Monico Puentevella said, “The City of Bacolod is proud to congratulate the Ceres FC for the achievement of overcoming top contending squads in its division. This proves that our local team is among the best football units in the Philippines today.”
“I wish to commend Leo Rey Yanson and his family, together with the club’s management for their continuing belief in the capacity of our local athletes to compete and excel against the best in the country,” Puentevella added.
