HIMAMAYLAN City's Ryan Sermona, the reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) International super featherweight champion, is scheduled to defend his title against Australian and World Boxing Union (WBU) super featherweight champ Corey McConnell on August 9 at Crossing Theatre in New South Wales, Australia.
The 26-year-old Sermona, nicknamed "The Crusher" (16 wins, 5 losses with 9KOs), won a fourth round TKO against Matt Garlett to capture the WBC International Super Featherweight title in their December 2013 clash at Northbridge in Australia.
For Sermona, it is not just about keeping his belt but also bouncing back from a sixth round KO against Shingo Eto in Japan last April. "The Crusher" has to protect his prestige being the defending Games and Amusement Board super featherweight titlist after beating Balweg Bangoyan via technical draw.
McConnell (13-1-1, win-loss-draw with a KO) scored a unanimous decision win over Negrense and Philippine Boxing Federation super bantamweight champion Jerry “Dangerous” Nardo last year.
Currently, Negros Occidental has WBO Junior Flyweight champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes of Bacolod and Murcia, WBO Inter-Continental super bantamweight titlist Genesis “Azukal” Servania of Bacolod City, WBO International super flyweight champ “King” Arthur Villanueva of Bago City, and newly-crowned Asian Boxing Federation junior bantamweight champion Sonny Jaro of Silay City.
Jaro, former World Boxing Council flyweight champion, knocked out Indonesian Ichal Tobida during their clash at the Almendras Gym, Davao City last Saturday.
