Goals and saves-A A +A
Monday, July 7, 2014
WHILE the world awaits the World Cup semi-finals between favorite Germany and host Brazil, and Argentina against Netherlands, the best goalmakers and goalkeepers have made a name for themselves in the Fifa 2014 competition.
The trio, all wearing jersey number 10, has been the toast of the World Cup. Midfielder James Rodriguez of Colombia made six goals in nine shots while forward Lionel Messi of Argentina has four of 15 attempts.
The injured Neymar of Brazil also went four of 10 shots to join the top three best shooters of the competition.
The "saviors" of the goal posts whose name have become bywords are Tim Howard of the United States of America whose 27 saves is the World Cup's best. The Yank conceded only six goals.
Nigerian goalie Vincent Enyeama likewise will go home a hero with 22 saves with five goals conceded. Keylor Navas of Costa Rica completes the cast saving 21 shots and conceding only two.
Of the six booters, only Messi is assured of increasing his achievement as Argentina advance to the semis against dangerous Netherlands which won 4-3 on penalty shootout over Costa Rica in the quarterfinal.
Messi and his fellow Argentinians upset Belgium 1-0 to advance while Neymar of Brazil is out of the competition after Colombian Juan Zuñiga hit his back hard resulting to a fractured vertebrae.
The host Brazilians beat Columbia, 2-1, in the QF and has the spectators' advantage against Germany which blanked France 1-0.
Will the South Americans prevail over the Europeans? Will Argentina complete its comeback having returned to the World Cup semis after 24 years?
Will it be an all-South America final or vice versa?
For those fans who predicted boldly who will be the champion, the number is down to four.
Maybe you can start betting and figuring out what is there to put your money's worth.
As a side bet, will it be Brazil-Netherlands, Argentina-Germany, Brazil-Argentina, or Netherlands-Germany?
If your goal is to win, go ahead and shoot.
But if you want to save, just hold on to it.
