Barangay 19 takes last semis berth in MC U21-A A +A

A RESURGENT Barangay 19 squad took the fourth and last spot in the semi-final of the 8th Monico Cup scheduled next weekend at the Bays Center in downtown Bacolod.
Last year's runner-up, knocked out in the quarterfinal by Barangay 18, returned with vengeance by beating Barangay 35 of Maui Huelar last Sunday and Handumanan on Saturday to breathe some air of hope for a comeback.
The trio of Tonog, Regalado, and Lope burned the hoops inside and out for a 45-29 halftime advantage. A 14-4 spurt ignited by a rain of triples in the first four minutes of the game was all it took to stifle Handumanan which requested to delay the game 90 minutes after its 3:30 p.m. schedule.
Barangay 19 was patient enough to wait as it stormed to 35-25 five minutes before the end of second quarter ignoring a supposed psychological ploy which did not work.
Its 2-2-1 full court press and relentless fastbreak attack were enough to cancel Handumanan's Sunday game against Barangay 35 as it become a no-bearing game with no chance for a triple tie in sight.
At 56-34 midway through the third quarter, it was obvious Handumanan was playing disorganized basketball while Barangay 19 learned its lesson after Barangay 18 derailed its outright entry to the semifinals.
Ironically, both squads will meet again because of the 1 versus 4 format while Barangay 10 and Singcang-Airport will square off in the 2-3 crossover match.
The winners this coming Saturday will dispute the championship the next day with all Top 4 capable of bringing home the title.
