REIGNING Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) super bantamweight title- holder Jerry “Dangerous” Nardo attempts to take a world title for the second time when he goes up against Australian Brett William Smith (18 wins, a draw and 2 losses with 9 KOs) in the ACE Boxing’s “The Last Stand” in Queensland, Australia on July 19.

The world title fight is for the vacant World Boxing Union (WBU) lightweight division.

Nardo, with 19 wins and 4 losses, failed to capture the title last year in a controversial unanimous decision loss against Australian Corey McConnell for the WBU super featherweight championship held in the latter’s hometown in Southport RSL, Queensland.

Rev. Henry Guanzon’s protegee from Escalante City lost to McConnell after Australian judges Paul Tapley and Wally Lewis scored 119-109 while Allan Burford has 120-108.

The 22-year-old fighter from Top Prime Stable is coming off with back-to-back knockout victories after stopping Jilo Merlin of La Trinidad, Benguet in April. Merlin lasted only three rounds of the scheduled 12-round clash for the PBF championship.

Nardo then dropped Rolly Llino in the fourth round of the eight-round fight in December 2013.

Smith, 33, has triple wins of late, two by knockouts over Non Sithsaithong of Thailand last March 2014 in Queensland.

He also halted fellow Aussie Joey Williams in ninth round for the vacant WBF lightweight belt and later defeated Indonesian Rivo Rengkung via unanimous decision.

Meanwhile, reigning PBF bantamweight champion Rhay Rhay “Striker” Guanzon, also of Top Prime Stable and son of Rev. Guanzon, suffered a split decision loss to Rowel Garcia of Koronadal City in eight rounds last June 20 in Agusan del Sur.

Top Prime Stable has three PBF champions, including flyweight champion Juan “The Punisher” Purisima.
