8th Monico Cup semis rescheduled to Aug. 2-A A +A

THE top four teams have a bonus two weeks to rest, plan more, practice their plays, and pray they win on August 2.
Barangays 10 and Singcang-Airport, and Barangays 18 and 19 are set to knock each other out in the semifinals of the 8th Monico Cup 21 Under Inter-Barangay Basketball Tournament. The winners play for the title on Sunday, August 3 at the Bays Center in Bacolod City.
Office of the Youth and Sports Development (OYSD) officer Joey Puentevella announced that the postponement is due to players’ examinations and minor repair of the playing venue. The SF games are supposed to be played today.
Scheduled to face-off is Barangay 19 which was beaten in the quarterfinals by neighbor Barangay 18. The reigning MC runner-up survived the losers bracket by beating Barangays 35 and Handumanan. The 1-4 format, however, shoved them to a rematch with Barangay 18, giving them a chance get back at their tormentors.
The other SF match is between Barangay 10 and Singcang-Airport.
The Monico Cup, initiated by then congressman Monico Puentevella, has been one of the avenues for promising local basketball talents like PBA’s top pick Severino “Nonoy” Baclao, Vengie Vergara, Alfie Villariza, Briton Javelona, and Joemel Paderog.
Local schools scouting for players in this summer tournament are West Negros University, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, University of St. La Salle and Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod and other institutions from Panay Island.
The 8th Monico Cup is supervised by tournament manager Jack Marañon, and OYSD coordinator Art Puentevella.
