FOUR standouts of Ceres-La Salle FC have joined the Philippine men’s football team Azkals in defending its Philippine Football Federation Peace Cup title on September 3 to 6 at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
Fil-Spanish defenders Carli de Murga and Juani Guirado, and Fil-German midfielders Manny Ott and Patrick Reichelt complete Thomas Dooley’s roster composed of Amani Aguinaldo, Misagh Bahadoran, Nate Burkey, Kenshiro Daniels, Jason de Jong, Anton del Rosario; Curt Dizon, Mark Hartmann, OJ Porteria, Paul Mulders, Fitch Arboleda, Simone Rota, Daisuke Sato, Greatwich siblings Chris and Simon, Younghusband brothers James and Phil, skipper Rob Gier, and keepers Patrick Deyto and Roland Muller.
The Philippines is hoping to avenge its 2-1 loss last year against Chinese Taipei at Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.
The winner of the Philippines-Chinese Taipei match will play against the victor of the Palestine-Myanmar in the finals of the tournament whose format is revised by a recent Fifa memorandum.
This year’s edition of the Peace Cup will be one of the Azkals’ scheduled matches as part of the team’s build up for the upcoming Suzuki Cup where the Nationals reached the semifinals but lost to Singapore in an away game.
The Azkals retained their Peace Cup title with a 3-1 victory over Pakistan. The home squad trailed one-nil in the early part after Kaleem Ullah scored the first goal for the visitors. Reichelt nailed the equalizer in the 35th minute to end the half at one-all.
Greatwich then found himself at the front of the goal and scored the national’s second in the 78th minute. Stephan Shrock sent the winning goal in the 88th minute.
