FOLLOWING the successful stint of the Philippine weightlifting team in the recently-concluded World Weightlifting Championships in California, the team has turned their focus to next year’s Asian Games in Indonesia.
The Weightlifting Association of the Philippines (WAP) took home a silver medal and a bronze medal courtesy of Olympian Hidilyn Diaz after the Zamboanga-hailed lifter tallied 199 points in the 53 kg behind gold medalist Sopita Tanasan from Thailand and silver medalist Kristina Shermetova from Turkmenistan.
The world championships, which also featured many Olympians, proved to be a good battleground for the Philippines.
Meanwhile, 21-year-old Kristel Macrohon made her world championships debut, finishing fifth in the snatch and fourth in clean and jerk, as she settled for fifth overall in Group B of the 69-kilogram division.
WAP president Monico Puentevella Wednesday said that aside from Diaz and Macrohon, among the prospects they are looking forward to be part of the team in 2018 Asian Games are Dessa de los Santos, Elreen Anne Ando, and Elien Rose Perez.
Perez captured three gold medals in the 2017 Asian Senior Cup Weightlifting Championships in Yanggu, South Korea held last month. (HGD)
