24-hour scrabble marathon set July 17-18

BAGUIO tile pushers, including those from Metro Manila and Batangas, will compete in the 24-hour scrabble marathon on July 17 to 18 at the Ayuyang restaurant.

The 24-hour marathon event, which starts on a Saturday evening, aims to set a record in points accumulated over a period of 24 hours and to promote the game of scrabble spearheaded by the Baguio-Benguet Word Builders Club.

"This is the second time we're doing this event for the Philippines, which aims to establish a record in points scored during a period of 24 hours," BBWBC president Huub Luyk said.

Luyk, an engineer by profession, is no stranger to this kind of event after playing 42 hours of "klaverjas," a Dutch card game in the Netherlands in 1975.

Four players will represent the city in the 24-hour marathon bannered by Philippines second top scrabble player Roger Parchamento.

Parchamento, an engineer and instructor by profession, will be joined by number 13 player (according to rankings) Abe Gogoling, 22 William Caluza, and 25 Malou Coronacion.

Luyk told Sun.Star the group still has to meet with the Manila and Batangas players on whom the Baguio team will face.

The marathon will have four players playing in a round robin format for a period of 24 hours in the event backed by Goldrich Construction, U-Need Lumber, and Special Stage Auto Shop.

Luyk said each players may be allowed to take a five-minute rest during the duration of the game and can be accumulated and taken together up to a total of 30 minutes which will be officiated by four referees who will oversee the games and serve as adjudicator.

The BBWBC president, meanwhile, said they are also spearheading another tournament this September for the city's centennial celebration.

The BBWBC was organized to promote the game of scrabble in the city and northern Luzon. Since its beginning in September 2001, the club has grown from five members to 30 active players and has organized many well-participated tournaments. (Roderick Osis)
