BBEAL screening for basket, volleyball over

WITH the screening in the basketball and volleyball competition almost finished, rivalry among the city's top collegiate squad is once again set to take center stage when the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League opens Aug. 14.

While both competitions will simultaneously opens right after the opening, attention will focus on the men's basketball contest, the centerpiece tournament of the league, as the University of Baguio Cardinals gun for a back-to-back title.

But the technical committee has yet to finish the screening on Aug. 2 with six other sports events which will also be played during the first semesters which includes archery, badminton, chess, sepak takraw, swimming, and table tennis.

"So far we have already finished screening for basketball and volleyball," said University of the Cordilleras athletic director Yul Benosa.

"We will finalize the screening next Monday," added University of Baguio athletic director Ed Laureano.

A strict implementation of rules, particularly on the eligibility of players has been pushed by the athletic directors who are members of the technical committee.

Eligibility of players include residency which is one year for transferees who are non- BBEAL members while a two year residency period will be implemented to players who are transferees coming from a BBEAL member school.

Schools participating in the BBEAL include Baguio Central University; host Benguet State University, Cordillera Career Development College, Philippine Military Academy, Pines City Colleges, UB, UC, University of the Philippines and Saint Louis University.

An athlete may also be allowed to play passing at least 50 percent of the total number of subjects enrolled during the last semester and must have at least 12 units enrolled in the current semester.

Graduating students meanwhile who have less than 12 units remaining in the current semester will be allowed to play.(Roderick Osis)
