Benguet university ends science fair

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Students and entrepreneurs alike gathered together at Benguet State University (BSU) for the closing rites of this year’s Science and Technology Fair.

After a week of exhibits and fairs, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Cordillera Administrative Region handed out the awards for the participating university, schools, government agencies, and entrepreneurs for their partaking in the 2010 Northern Luzon Cluster Science and Technology Fair.

Among the awards given are ISO (International Certification for Standardization) accreditation of Regional Standard Testing Laboratories, Youth Excellence in Science, Recognition of DOST Active Partners in the Region, and the outstanding fair exhibitors.

BSU won the best exhibit for the S&T Exhibit Category, closely followed by Mountain Province State Polytechnic College, Highland Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium, and Kalinga-Apayao State College.

For the Small Microentrepreneurs (SME) Techno Bazaar Category, Bella’s Calasiao Puto Special was declared the winner with David’s Well Craft and More, Red Clay Pottery Crafts, and Beama’s Agri Products as the finalists.

In terms of highest in sales, the top exhibitors are Beama’s Agri Products for the horticulture sector, Bella’s Calasiao Puto Special for the food processing sector, Pinanpanga Woodworks for the furniture sector, David’s Well Craft and more for the GHD (gifts, decors, houseware, handicrafts) sector and, Natomo Manufacturing for the metals sector.

Winners of the Robotics Competition held February 15 include University of Baguio Science High School (first place) and Saint Louis University (second place).

For the Logic Gates category: University of Baguio (first place), Saint Louis University (second Place), and Colegio de Dagupan (third place).

On the second day of the Robotics Competition, winners of the Logic Gates category are SLU (first place), SLU (second place), and UB (third place) while the Microcontroller category winners are UB (first place), SLU (second place), and UB (third place).

Out of the 18 schools that competed for the elementary level of the Science and Technology Trivia from February 17-18, SLU-Laboratory Elementary School and Benguet Sped Center (first place), Step Learning Academy and Epiphany Learning Center (second place), and Small World Christian School Foundation and Star Educational Christian Foundation (third place) were chosen as winners for the February 17 event.

In the high school level, 21 schools participated with Baguio City National High School and UB High School (first place), UB High School and Star Educational Christian Foundation (second place), and Tabuk National High School and BCNHS (third place) declared as winners.

The event was graced by BSU president Dr. Rogelio D. Colting, Benguet Governor Nestor Fongwan, Baguio City Congressman Mauricio Domogan, DOST-CAR Director Dr. Ben Ladilad and Assistant Regional Director Dr. Osmundo B. Belmonte, and the Cordillera Regional Science High School.
