BENGUET Governor Nestor Fongwan is asking the declaration of Benguet under a state of calamity due to the tens of millions of pesos in damages suffered by the province to the past three typhoons that hit the Cordillera region.
Fongwan asked for the declaration of a state of calamity, saying the attacks of typhoons Emong, Isang, and Kiko brought millions worth of damage to lives, crops, properties, animals, and infrastructure.

In June alone, Typhoon Emong caused damages worth more than P20 million to the province. Damages brought by the typhoons Isang and Kiko have yet to be assessed.
Typhoon Emong, which battered the region in June, caused a total of P20,203,258.48 in damages to roads and bridges, buildings, irrigation and water works and agriculture industry of the province.
Typhoon Kiko, which was the latest to hit the region, also caused huge damages to the province, including the death of several miners and rescuers.
The declaration of a state of calamity by the Provincial Board would authorize the use of the 10 percent calamity fund of the Provincial Government.
The resolution declaring a state of calamity in the province has yet to be approved by the provincial legislative body.
