Caviteño steals limelight in Baguio chess tourney

BAGUIO woodpushers suffered a big snag as they were limited to runner-up finishes in the recent Baguio Center Mall (BCM) non-masters chess tournament.
This as a Caviteño stole the limelight from local bets who also pocketed the top cash prize of P7,000 and trophy in the open category.

Roel Abelgas scored a draw against Allan Cantonjos, the one-time BCM non-masters chess champion, to take the crown in the 13th edition of the quarterly chess tournament.
Tarlac’s John Ranel Morazo settled for second place and to take home the P5,000 cash prize, while Richelieu Salcedo of Manila settled for third and took home the cash prize P3,000.
Cantonjos settled for fourth and took home P1,000.
Verth Alora of Pangasinan placed fifth to take home the P800 cash prize with Nelson Mariano lll, Ivan Biag, Belsar Valencia, Rommel Figuerres, and Ryan Dungca pocketed P500 each who placed from 6th to 10th respectively.
University of the Cordilleras Shun Paul Van Nillo was the top junior player, while Julio Busaing was the top senior woodpusher. University of Baguio’s Zyralle Kindipan bagged the top lay plum.
In the kiddie division, Paolo Bersamina of Manila City snatched the victory against defending champion Heirry Manaloto to pocket the P5,000 grand prize with the latter settled for second place and take home the P3000 cash prize.
Bersamina had a perfect seven round game to pocket the championship crown while Manaloto scored a draw against Baguio’s Sciart Dale Ancheta with the latter losing the tie break and settle for the P1,500 cash prize.
Artrino Paul Fortin of Zambales settled for fourth with a cash prize of P1,000 while Baguio’s John Kevin Garidan took home the P800 cash prize for a decent fifth place finish.
Wrapping up the top ten are Brylle Vinluan, Jan Lawrence Concepcion, Jesmon Pandy, Kaissa Ancheta and Saramae Pandy who all went home with a consolation prize of P500.
