Climate change caravan goes to Baguio, Benguet

IN FEBRUARY 2006, heavy rains caused the landslide at St. Bernard, Leyte, which took the lives of hundreds. Later that year, Typhoon Milenyo hit the Philippines and Vietnam and claimed the lives of over 700 people.

And recently, Typhoon Emong killed 14 in the Cordillera and 28 others in northern Luzon. These are a few of the calamities which visited the country.

These typhoons are examples of the wrath of nature.

Hedcor Inc. and the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), with the aim of increasing awareness on climate change, are staging a “Climate Change Caravan” among elementary and high school schools in Baguio and Benguet.

Hedcor and UNIC, from July 6 to 17, will be visiting various schools to educate young minds to participate in the global effort to mitigate the effects of global warming.

The activity was earlier conducted in schools at Davao City and Davao del Sur for the last two weeks.

The youngsters will be taught what climate change is and its effects, activities which contribute to it and steps we all can do to help lessen its impact. (Genevieve Toledo)
