Disaster council gives out cash assistance

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) on Friday distributed cash assistance to families of the victims of Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng here.

Financial assistance of P10,000 was given to the families of each fatality while P5,000 for the injured individuals.

The Cordillera Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (CRDCC) reports reveal Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng left 259 dead and 37 injured in the Cordilleras particularly in Baguio City, Benguet, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and Abra.

The Benguet province recorded the highest deaths at 161 and 29 injuries.

Governor Nestor Fongwan thanked the Cordillera Regional Disaster Coordinating Council and the Office of Civil Defense for facilitating the release of the financial assistance.

Meanwhile, while the relocation for hundreds of victims is still being processed, the homeless are temporarily staying with relatives, friends and in tents provided by the Rotary Club.

Housing units worth P90,000 will home victims in a 3.3-hectare land in Tawang, owned by the Benguet State University. (Ma. Elena Catajan)
