FILIPINO Intercontinental Boxing Organization (IBO) flyweight champion Nonito Donaire is expected to train in the city after his successful defense early last month.

The IBO champion trained in the city last February for his mandatory defense of his title.

Donaire, who is moving up to super flyweight division and is hoping to get a crack at World Boxing Organization champion Jose Lopez (40-7-2, 32 KOs), said he will return to the Philippines to once again train in the summer capital according to the website philboxing.com.

He is fighting in a big card being planned by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum in San Francisco on August 22

Donaire trained under former two-division world champion Dodie Boy Peñalosa, brother Jonathan Peñalosa and former WBO bantamweight champion Gerry Peñalosa for his last International Boxing Federation/International Boxing Organization flyweight title defense against previously undefeated Raul Martinez.

Donaire dominated the Texas-based Martinez, knocking him down twice in Round 1, once in Round 3 and for the fourth and final time in Round 4 before the referee decided to call a halt to the one-sided bout.

While he confirmed the decision to give up the IBO belt, Donaire told philboxing.com recently he decided to hold on to the IBF flyweight title at least for now.

“Until I get a chance for the WBO or any other organization’s super flyweight title, I’ll keep it (IBF title) for now.”

Donaire said he is waiting on the confirmation if the fight against Lopez is going to push through or not in San Francisco. (Roderick Osis)
