Ifugao Rice Terraces crumbles due to El Niño

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

THE state of the world famous Rice Terraces is worsening due to the extreme heat caused by the El Niño phenomenon, said Governor Teodoro Baguilat.

The governor said the water from the irrigation systems is not enough to sustain the traditional rice farming of the highland province. The lack of water also makes the terraces vulnerable to erosion.

Baguilat also said government’s support for the El Niño stricken province is yet to arrive.

The province recently has been declared under a state of calamity after logging millions in damages in livestock, rice and corn crops.

The governor, however, is preparing for the long haul of the dry spell that is said to last until June.

The Department of Agriculture here pegs initial damages have affected the Ifugao with P1.376 million in the region’s livestock from the municipalities of Alfonso Lista and Aguinaldo.

A Regional El Nino Task Force has also been formed in the Cordillera to help assess damage and recommend anti-El Niño measures to farmers. (Maria Elena Catajan)
