BATTED Balls returns to the city with flare as new talents took center stage in the Little League Club of Baguio during their recently concluded Summer Tournament over the weekend at the Baguio Athletic Bowl.
Quezon Elementary School topped the girls' softball 10-12 division disposing the elite Baguio Central School squad with three straight victories in the best of five game finals series that also saw baseball for boys in the three age divisions played as part city’s SumVac (Summer Vacation) events.
“We are happy at the same time still fired up after winning the contest in our respective division,” said QES coach Constancio Buasen.
“There are a lot challenges in bringing back the passion for batted balls in our city but with these young athletes striving to do their best we hope to develop a better standing as we compete in the Philippine Series,” Buasen added.
The QES Batterbelles dominated in day two of the contest with scores of 8-4, 9-1, and 5-4 to be crowned the best team in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the all-star squad of Baguio City National High School and Guisad Valley National High School romped over the star-studded City Hurlers crew making the highlights of the baseball contest of the senior’s division with three straight victories in the finals.
BCNHS and GVNHS All-Stars scrapped their opponents with 13-1, 13-4, 7-2 to be crowned the top young baseball athletes in the city.
Both baseball and softball had three separate age divisions specifically little league (10-12 years old), juniors (12-14 years old), and seniors (13-16) years old.
Organizers said aside from constructing a grassroots program for batted balls in the city, the competition will also be the scouting pool for the athletes to be sent in the up-coming Philippine Little League series to take place April 20-27 in Marikina City.
Organizers also mentioned the tournament aims to enhance batted ball skills amongst athletes, develop coaching and playing strategies of batted balls, and enhance teamwork amongst all the members of each team.
Partners of the event are Department of Education Division of Baguio, the City Government of Baguio, Baguio-Benguet Little League Club, Jackson Cayaos of Irisan Elementary School, and Samuel Egsaen from Elpidio Quirino Elementary School.
