Little Kibungan protective work begins

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Governor Nestor Fongwan said protective works at Little Kibungan area has begun in the hope to eliminate more accidents during rainy season.

Fongwan said the benching of the site has started for safety purposes.

Signs along the site have also been erected as the area has become a tourist attraction where photo opportunities are availed of by tourists and locals.

The construction of a breast wall with a base of three to four meters and at least 80 meters x 60 meters serving as a catch basin with the benching or terracing of the area is up for the area to reduce the risk posed by the expected occurrence of soil erosion in the rainy months.

Widening works is also up for the area to ensure the safety of motorists traversing the road.

The site is where hundreds died during the height of Typhoon Pepeng in October 2009. The highlands mourned the passing of over 180 from the town's capital alone.

Damage for the regions flood control structures are placed at 83 million.

The Little Kibungan is still a high risk area. The province and the municipality alerted barangay heads of possible landslides in the rainy days ahead. (Ma. Elena Catajan)
