SAN JOSE CITY, Nueva Ecija - Police arrested 15 suspected bag slashers and pickpockets here, who allegedly victimized tourists in Baguio’s Panagbenga, Monday afternoon.
Superintendent Sidney Villaflor, city police chief, identified the suspects as Zenaida Fernando, 53, the alleged leader; Aprilyn Alvaro, May Ann Alvaro, Virginia Duyon, Cherry Gaspar, Teresa Reyes, Domilen Gregorio, Marcelino Pangilinan, Mark Jason Gaspar, Mark Anthony Franco, Jason Franco, Joselito Fernando, Hermogenes Fernando, Alvin Fernando and Edgar Cesar.
The suspects are all residents of Barangay Abar First here, investigation showed.
Recovered from them were dozens of cards named to various people, slashing blades and unspecified amount.
Villaflor said Zenaida has at least three warrants of arrest for robbery and theft issued by the Regional Trial Court in Alaminos, Pangasinan. Also subject of an arrest warrant was Jason Franco.
Villaflor said police flagged down the passenger XLT jeepney supposedly rented by the suspects after receiving information that Zenaida’s group were returning to the city from three days of alleged pickpocketing and bag slashing activity in Baguio City.
Zenaida, however, denied she led the group to illegal activities. She said it was her daughter, Jenny Ann Fernando, who managed to elude arrest, who could have done pickpocketing and bag slashing while she and the rest were unwinding for the festival.(PNA)
