Ranking NPA killed in Abra encounter

NARVACAN, Ilocos Sur - The highest ranking leader of the communist rebels in the Ilocos-Cordillera front was identified as among the eight rebels killed in an encounter between army soldiers and New People’s Army (NPA) guerillas in the outskirts of Tineg, Abra last Monday.

Police identified the slain rebel leader as Loverito Bernal, alias “Oxy”, identified as the commanding officer of the Kilusang Larangang Gerilya Northeast of the Ilocos Cordillera Regional Committee, of Lacub, Abra.

The seven others were Reynaldo Masadao, alias “Cris”, of Malibcong, Abra; and Junjun Balbin, alias “Recti.” The other slain rebels were only identified through their aliases as “Omeng”; “Bunso”, said to be from Ilocos”; “Berlyn”; “Winnie”, and “Ogie”, both female guerilla fighters and were the group’s medical officers.


Police said the lone soldier who died during the encounter was identified as Corporal Lloyd Tega, a member of the Army’s 41st Infantry Batallion.

The remains of the dead NPA rebels were brought to Bangued, Abra.

The gun battle took place about 7:45 a.m. last Monday. (Freddie G. Lazaro)
