THE City Government will conduct garbage transfer and sorting activities in various material recovery facilities in Baguio City to comply with the Supreme Court (SC)’s order.

The SC released a cease and desist order from any garbage-related activities at the Irisan dumpsite.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan, in his weekly program, appealed to residents to consistently practice segregation and ease the burden by helping the city solve its current garbage problem.

He said the government-owned limekiln and MRFs will hold the more than 200 tons of garbage collected daily.

But Domogan stressed the limekiln in Purok 12 will only be a temporary transfer and sorting station while the city finalizes procedures for the transfer and hauling of garbage.

He also said it would be easier for the city to sort biodegradables from non-biodegradables, which include recyclables and residuals, if residents continue to segregate their garbage.

He said biodegradable wastes will be brought to the Environmental Recycling System in the dumpsite compound to be processed as compost fertilizer.

Non-biodegradable wastes such as recyclables will be sold for additional income, while residual wastes will be hauled to a private landfill in Capas, Tarlac.

He said proper segregation has contributed to the efficient processing of wastes by the ERS machines since October.

From 12 tons of biodegradable wastes per day, the city is now able to generate the ideal 48 tons of biodegradable wastes to be processed by the ERS machines.

Since the city acquired permits from the Department of Agriculture to sell the compost fertilizer, he said the City Government has been selling the byproduct of the ERS machines.

“Our concentration should not be in revenue but in solving the garbage problem,” he said.

This, he answered to criticisms of some councilors who questioned the return of investment on the P128 million-worth machines.

He assured once the solid waste management procedure on the ERS machines will be mechanized, the city will no longer have garbage problems.
