6 schools shine in best nutrition school canteen search

LAGAWE, Ifugao - Six schools in the province recently received their cash prizes and certificates of recognition from the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC) for winning in the search for the most nutritious school canteen last year.

The Lagawe Central School (LCS) and Lawig Elementary School (LES) in the towns of Lagawe and Lamut, respectively, were declared as Best Nutrition Friendly schools for school year 2011–2012.

The LCS was declared as the winner for central schools category while Kiangan and Mayoyao Central got the second and third places, respectively.


Under the elementary category, Lawig Elementary School topped, followed by Umalbong Elementary School in Hingyon and Bolog Elementary School in Kiangan municipality as third place.

First placers received P2,500 each while P1,500 and P1,000 for second and third places, respectively.

The Search for Nutrition Friendly School Canteen is one of the local initiatives of the Provincial Government conducted yearly in the different central and elementary schools in the province.

It aims to ensure safe, nutritious snacks and to continue advocate the nutrition guidelines for Filipinos and promote the choice of selecting indigenous, native delicacies with high nutritive value aware on their importance as compared against junk foods.

The search also aims to maintain a nutrition-friendly school canteen or atmosphere providing information and education to the pupils and guiding them to maintain an ideal normal weight. (Marcelo L. Lihgawon)
