LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- Kapangan town will start the celebration of the 4th Anitap Festival today, April 26.

Dubbed as the Anitap Festival ed Kapangan with the theme “Cultural sensitivity towards global change,” the one-day activity will be highlighted by cultural presentations, dances and talks.

Opening rituals will be performed on Thursday afternoon by Ama Blas Wallac in preparation for festival opening set on the morning of Friday, the 27th.

A cultural parade is set at 8 a.m. with the village members displaying their native wear and accessories with presentations, the datok and basbas, cultural rites will again be performed by Wallac before the owik, or the butchering of sacrificial pigs.

Mayor Roberto Canuto will lead the day’s presentations with guests from the National Commission of Culture and the Arts, the agency funding this year’s celebrations.

Presentations by the Ibaloi School of Living Tradition featuring the Origin of Kodal will be performed.

While the tongatong, badiw, baliw, tallak, binannoy and kalon will be presented by the barangays.

The Anitap festival derives its name from the local anitap tree which thrives in the municipality.

The tree is a source of material for indigenous instruments including the “tallak,” used for the same dance.

Anitap wood is light and produces a distinct sound when carved into the correct shape. The Tallak is used in cañao celebrations even before the coming of metal gongs.
