LA TRINIDAD – The Cordillera police reported a surge in rape cases in the province of Benguet from January to March this year topping the regional count.
Benguet has 13 cases, Baguio City and Ifugao came in second with six cases each, while Abra logged eight cases, followed by Apayao with four cases, Mountain Province with two and a lone case in Kalinga.
The data were presented during the Regional Peace and Order Council meeting last week.
Rapes cases in the region logged at 49 for 2012, decreasing from 2011’s 67 cases.
Although rape cases surged in the province, the police report indicated overall crime volume in the Cordilleras from January to May 2012 decreased by 3,081 compared to the same period last year.
Earlier, a report on abuse of children by various groups was also submitted to the United Nations Children’s Education Fund showing Cordilleras as one of the areas of concern.
Governor Nestor Fongwan has since called for a meeting for all stakeholders to prepare a summit tackling child abuse in the province.
