City asks Aquino to order halt on tree cutting

LOCAL environmentalist leader and city Councilor Philian Weygan has submitted to the City Council a resolution asking President Benigno Aquino III to order a moratorium of tree cutting in Baguio City.
Weygan said she filed the resolution after several groups asked her office to help stop the further decimation of trees in the city even in privately-owned lots.
For the last two decades, the Baguio Re-Greening Movement has succeeded in the considerable restoration of forest covers in this place known as the “City of Pines” but dozens of pine and alnus trees have been either earth-balled or cut to give way for perpendicular structures and roads.
Weygan said her resolution was already referred to the committee on environment and the deliberations could start next week.
She added that several civic groups are now active in the support for the move to fully restore the greeneries in this city that serves as the country’s summer capital as well as educational center in northern Luzon. (Aure Galacgac/PNA)
