ITOGON, Benguet – The lawmaking body of Itogon asked the different barangays to be transparent and report new mining operations in its vicinity.
Vice Mayor Noel Ngolob said they will mandate every barangay to inform the council on any new mining operation that opens without any permission from the local government.
He said the request for transparency came from Barangay Dalupirip because of its experiences with some companies conducting mining operations without proper information and permission from the local government.
Ngolob said this scheme shocked Barangay Dalupirip.
The councilors then agreed to mandate the barangays to report new mining operations in their areas.
The town consists of nine barangays, namely Ampucao, Dalupirip, Gumatdang, Loacan, Poblacion, Tinongdan, Tuding, Ucab, and Virac. The barangay captains of these barangays are Eddie Amuasen, Ramon Cariño, Benedicta Sagamang, Henry Diamnuan, Andres Panayo, Benjamin Medino, Purita Segundo, Edwardo Daniel, and Noel Bilibli, respectively.
The town’s One Town One Product (Otop) is gold as proclaimed by Resolution 285, series of 2008.
The municipality is the largest town of Benguet. It has a land area of 49,800 hectares or roughly 18.75 percent of the provincial land area of 266,540 hectares. Of this, 1,803.10 hectares comprises the urban area while 47,996.90 hectares comprises the rural areas. The town is classified as first-class municipality.
