THE Philippine Military Academy (PMA) overcame a double digit deficit edging Baguio College of Technology, 82-79, in men’s basketball of the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League, Sunday at the CCDC gym.
It was another sorry loss for the newcomer Atoms, who suffered their third setback in four games, after leading by as high as 20, 2-22 with 3:48 remaining in the first canto of the ball game while the Cavaliers scored their second win in four games.
“May halong swerte na rin kasi yung mga tira namin nung second half eh pumapasok na,” said PMA coach Jojo Estebar.
BCT led all the way until the end of first half enjoying a one point lead, 40-41, but that lead was overturned when PMA’s Kevin Manuel knocked a triple to tie the ball game at 49 with 5:40 left in the third.
The Cavaliers at one point led by one basket, 51-50, with 5:20 remaining but the Atoms came surging back with four unanswered baskets coming from Jayson Pasag, which saw them taking the lead anew and closing the period with a 59-62 advantage.
With a three point advantage, the Atoms opened the payoff period with five straight points to enjoy a 59-67 lead with 9:20 remaining in the ball game.
Manuel then led a comeback for the Fort Del Pilar based dribblers on a 12-4 run to tie the ball game once again at 73 with 4:36 remaining.
The Cavaliers then capped the run with a three point play to put them on top by three with 3:19 remaining but BCT did not just go down without a fight as it tied the ball game anew at 76 all with 3:19 remaining.
However, it proved to be the last stand for the Atoms as it suffered another setback in its inaugural campaign in the BBEAL’s 26th season.
Manuel led the Cavaliers with 27 points while Jerby Calibo came up with 24 points for the Atoms together with Gibson Kitongan and Erwin Perez who chipped in 13 and 12 points each.
Earlier, Baguio Central University Eagles leaned on Brent Esteban’s 24 point production to score another huge win this time by defeating winless Benguet State University Buffalos, 107-76.
The Eagles listed their third win in five games after edging the Buffalos, who now falls to 0-4. (Roderick Osis)
