LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- The province of Benguet recently submitted project proposals on culture and traditions for funding under the National Commission of Culture and the Arts (NCCA) competitive grant program for 2013.
The proposals are intended to preserve culture and sustain the province’s existence for the generations to come.
Brian Camhit, member of the Committee of Northern Cultural Communities–NCCA Benguet, said a total of eight proposals were submitted to NCCA subject for screening and approval by its executive committee.
The proposals are the Eco-Tourism and Bendiyan Festival of Kabayan; Cultural Day of Kapangan; Cultural Awareness Seminar Workshop Series in Kabayan; Ibadoy, Kalanguya, Kankanaey Vocabulary Translation; School of Living Tradition (SLT) on Performing Arts (Phase I) of Kabayan; SLT on Performing Arts of Ampusongan National High School, Bakun; SLT on Ibaloi Performing Arts (Phase I) of Kiwas Elementary School; First Bokod Climb of the Association of Bokod Adventure, Eco-Guides Incorporated (ABADEG) in Bokod; Preservation of Ibaloi Culture and Traditions of Wangal Elementary School in this town; and SLT on Ibaloi Patda Embroidery (Phase II) of Kapangan.
Camhit said considered as priority are the dying culture such as dances and playing of instruments where most of those performing are the old folk.
Anchored on the vision, “Filipino culture as the wellspring of national and global well being,” NCCA pursues its thrusts and priorities in preserving heritage, culture and traditions in the form of grants accorded to artists, arts organizations, non-government organizations, private organizations, and National Government agencies.
Camhit said that unlike the previous years, slots are now limited; the reason project proposals are subject for screening before approval to determine the best project based on compliance to eligibility requirements and other additional requirements depending on the category they fall under.
He said the province where grants fall under the Subcommission on Cultural Communities and Traditional Arts are categorized under School of Living Tradition/training/seminars/workshops and climb for culture.
Camhit also informed that four projects for this year were already carried out and these include the SLT on Ibaloi Patda Embroidery on Ibaloi/Kankanaey clothing, SLT on Ibaloi Performing Arts of Itogon, Anitap Festival of Kapangan, and Bendiyan Festival of Kabayan.
Ongoing is SLT on Kankanaey Performing Arts of Buguias. (Susan Aro)
