Board asks Mines Bureau to explain Philex leak

THE Benguet Provincial Board asked the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)–CAR to attend its next session to give updates on the compliance of Philex Mining Corporation on the conditions imposed by the cease order.
Chairman of the Committee on Environment and Mining Board Member Benjamin Saguid, in his committee report, asked MGB–CAR Director Fay Apil to enlighten the body on this issue.
On August 2, 2012, the MGB–CAR issued a cease order to Philex Corporation, which suspended the operation of the company because of the leak occurred in its Tailings Pond 3.
On August 1, 2012, a leak was discovered in the ponds. Still, on August 30, another leak was uncovered at the Tailings Pond 3 of the mining firm. Because of the leakage, the company revealed it allegedly lost millions of money.
With the leak, several residents downstream livelihood were affected.
