EIGHT outstanding women leaders who have contributed to the advancement of the rights of their sector were recently recognized during the celebration of International Women’s Day.
Among those recognized were Baguio Health Department Dr. Zorayda Clavio for public health; Baguio City National High School principal Dr. Elma Donaal; Department of Social Welfare and Development regional focal person Perlita Panganiban; Queen of Peace punong baranagay Catherine Quinones for livelihood; and Baguio Nutrition Officer Angelita Sabado for Community Health Development.
Also feted in the annual Kababaihan Festival as outstanding women leaders are Gabriela secretary general Mila Singson for women’s rights; Angelita Tomeldan for daycare work; and Rose Wasan for Kalipi Leadership.
This is the eighth year that the City Government of Baguio has recognized Outstanding Women Leaders with some 51 women already given recognition in various fields aside from 51 more elderly women also awarded during the Centennial celebrations in 2009.
Civil Service Commission (CSC) Regional Director Marilyn Taldo, who was the guest speaker of the event, said the annual award and celebration is “a fitting tribute to what women can do and do in the future.”
She said the presence of women in the bureaucracy is already a sign of the continuing improvement of gender and development and gender awareness in the government.
The CSC, she said, has been recognizing government workers who help promote Gender and Development by including the annual Gawad Kawayan award which fetes outstanding gender equality and gender responsive programs in government.
Also given appreciation were best performing barangay women’s organizations from Middle Rock Quarry, Pacdal, Ambiong, Camdas, Camp 8, Pucsusan, Dizon Subdivision, Gibraltar, Samahang Kabalikat sa Kaunlaran, Lourdes Extension, San Roque Village, Sto. Rosario, Upper Quezon Hill, Loakan-Liwanag, Victoria Village and Lualhati barangay.
