Monday, March 18, 2013
BAGUIO City Mayor Mauricio Domogan approved last week the city ordinance mandating a 20-percent discount in parking fees for senior citizens.
Introduced by Councilors Nicasio Aliping Jr. and Betty Lourdes Tabanda, the ordinance named senior citizens as those residing in the Philippine who have reached 60 years of age.
The act recognizes “the important role of business establishments in the improvement of the welfare of senior citizens in the City of Baguio and to actively seek their partnership and cooperation, there is a need to give them discount in payment of parking fees.”
It is also anchored on Republic Act (RA) 9257, An Act Granting Additional Benefits and Privileges to Senior Citizens, amending RA 7432, which was signed into law February 26 of 2004.
The city council also realizes the important role of senior citizens, thus the ordinance.
The conditions in the ordinance, however, states that the motor vehicle should be driven by the senior citizen and that his/her valid senior card must be presented to the parking attendant.
Violators shall be fined P500, P1,000 and P1,500 for first, second and third offense, respectively. (Julie Fianza)
