LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Congressman Ronald Cosalan said the decision to file a Writ of Kalikasan against the operation of the Irisan dumpsite was the right choice.
Cosalan said, “This should have been done years ago,” adding that the safety of the people as well as the environment should be put at the top of priorities.
Cosalan said Baguio City is complying with the provisions of the Writ of Kalikasan as well as the Temporary Environmental Protection Order (Tepo) granted by the Supreme Court (SC) assuring there will be no dumping at the Irisan site.
The SC issued the Writ enjoining the City Government of Baguio from further degrading a major river system by continuously dumping waste in the 30-year-old Irisan landfill that caused the garbage spill during the onslaught of Typhoon Mina in September 2012.
The Tepo was founded since 2012.
Cosalan said, “In fairness to them, they are doing their best to comply,” adding there are no adverse reports by townsfolk with regards to the compliance the order.
Cosalan led the signing of the Writ of Kalikasan against Baguio City backed by, National Artist for visual arts Benedicto Cabrerra, Pedro Buyagao, Erlinda Soriano, Leonardo Taganas, Mike Bunnol, HIlario Palos, Elisa Mariano while the entire local council of Aringay, La Union likewise backed the Benguet case against the city with councilors, Charlie Chan Juloya, Benjamin Ong Sibuma, Emelio Roland Salting Yaranon, Teresita Oculto Garcia, Vito Dacanay Balangue, Romeo Bernal Cariño, Genoveva Lopez Obra and Victoriano Castro Batario.
